Mark Hamby Photo

Author, speaker, and Bible teacher Mark Hamby is the founder of Lamplighter Ministries. Through the genre of storytelling and the life-changing power of God's Word, Mark demonstrates through his teaching that there is a God in whom nothing is impossible.

In 1994 he published the first book in the Lamplighter Family Collection of rare books which gave birth to Lamplighter Publishing. In 2009 Lamplighter Theatre was birthed which is now heard by millions of listeners in over 25 countries. In 2011 Mark followed God's call to bring to fruition a 25-year-old dream-the Lamplighter Guild for Creative Disciplines.
In Mark's words, the mission of the Guild is to inspire a renaissance of excellence that leads one to know and enjoy God intimately and creatively make Him known attractively. Though the "lyfe is so short and the craft so long to learne," Mark believes that those who are diligent in their work will stand before kings (Prov 22:29).

A Great Awakening: Building Character One Story at a Time
Mark Hamby
In a culture sedated by images that deaden our senses and rob us of who we are created to be, a new trend is beginning to raise up powerful young leaders who are readers.  Join Mark as he exposes the damaging effects that certain kinds of media, electronic games, and literature, have on the brain, the conscience, the imagination, and one’s moral and spiritual development and how certain types of literature have a direct influence upon one's value system and powers of discernment. Most importantly, he will introduce initiatives that ignite motivation, revive the imagination, build character, and inspire excellence. If you haven’t heard this true story that changed a apathetic reader into a publisher, you won’t want to miss this!

The Education of a Child -The Wisdom of Fenelon
Mark Hamby
Working with parents and teachers over the past twenty-eight years, Mark will present what he believes is the most helpful and inspirational information of our day concerning the education of a child. Gleaning from a 17th-century gem, The Education of a Child from The Wisdom of Fenelon, Mark will present a “radical reversal” of our traditional approach to a biblical education. Commissioned to educate King Louis XIV incorrigible grandson to become the next king of France, Francois Fenelon wrote and then lived one of the greatest educational treatises ever written. In fact, in 1802, nearly 150 years later, Fenelon’s work was still revered as the most extraordinary educational work on record. Parenting based on gentleness, mentoring, joy, and patience will be among just a few of the highlights of this seminar. Through simple but forgotten common sense ideas, parents and teachers will gain an understanding that unlocks the heart and opens the mind—“When the level of fear decreases, the level of reasoning increases.”

A Father’s Love: A Faithful Son
Mark Hamby
Join Mark as he reveals an unusual passage of Scripture that is rarely preached or talked about. Twice God the Father speaks about His Son—once at His Son’s baptism and then three years later on top of a mountain. The second time He speaks he repeats what he said the first time but adds one significant component that is essential for all parents—“Listen to him.” Once you learn what this means, you will approach your children with a more purposeful plan that will cultivate their identity, confirm your love, be encouraged by your pleasure in them, and possess the confidence and authority that has been bestowed upon them. As always some of the most powerful teaching on parenting is right before our eyes. (Hebrews 5:8; David and javelins; Joseph, Daniel, Abraham, Moses, Peter: a servant and apostle—switched roles)

Calling, Conquest and Courage
Mark Hamby
Do we all have a specific calling for our lives? Join Mark as he reveals the unique calling of three powerful men in the Bible—Caleb, Samuel, and Peter. Learn how to prepare your children for their “calling” with a clear, biblically-based plan. Beginning with the radical conquest and courage of Caleb at Kiriath-sepher, discover what is most important regarding your children’s educational and moral development. Turning the page to the life of Samuel, learn how to overcome the barriers to one’s calling by slaying the giants of fear by faith. Fast forwarding to Peter, you will learn that we have been “called to a life of glory and excellence.” Without a calling, children wander aimlessly. With a calling, children can develop the courage of Caleb, the fearless faith of Samuel, and a life of what Peter describes as partnership in the divine nature.

Joy in the Journey
Nancy Manos
The idea of teaching our children at home can be a rather dreamy notion.  We imagine happy, contented, obedient children that rise early, complete their chores without complaint, and cheerfully gather around the kitchen table eager to learn.  The reality often involves struggles that can leave a mom feeling overwhelmed and inadequate with children who are equally frustrated. The truth is that while the nitty gritty of teaching our children at home is sometimes messy and emotional with a variety of highs and lows, homeschooling is a great privilege and, yes, even a joy! Join Nancy as she shares encouragement to bolster you on those challenging days and refresh you as you endeavor to create an atmosphere of joy in this adventure with your children.

Nancy Manos

When we choose to homeschool our children, we have the opportunity to nurture and develop the unique gifts and abilities the Lord has placed in each one of our children at a much deeper level than if they were in someone else's care every day. In this session we will talk about the price we pay and remind ourselves why we started this journey and how we can finish strong.

What Do My Child’s Test Scores Really Mean?
Sarah Olbris
After a child is tested, the results are usually shown on a computerized printout containing columns of numbers in percentiles, standard scores, and stanines. These scores are often not fully understood, and as a result, the information is not used to shape instruction and guide decisions for a child’s educational program. In this workshop, Sarah will help parents interpret the significance of test scores and understand how to use the numbers to get a balanced view of the child’s strengths and weaknesses. Parents will gain a clearer understanding of the many types of achievement tests available, the differences between group and individualized testing, and the benefits of testing to monitor student progress and to guide instruction. Come to be encouraged and learn more from your child’s test scores.

Evaluating Your Child’s Skills and Abilities
Sarah Olbris
Although we usually think of evaluating as testing, there are a multitude of methods to monitor progress that don’t involve paper and pencil and a 100 point scale. You can creatively evaluate how your child is doing in any given subject while clarifying expectations for both of you. Learn: what a “rubric” is and how to use it to effectively measure progress, subjective versus objective evaluations, how to define parameters while thinking outside the box, and hands-on creative tools to measure progress for multi-ages. Come appreciate how to take the stress out of “grading” while enhancing your ability to evaluate and critique what your child is learning and understanding.

Classically Educating Your 7th-12th Grade Student
Kim Tanoue
This workshop will provide an overview of Classical Education in general, touching on how it differs from modern education. We will then delve into the unique characteristics of students at the dialectic and rhetoric levels, along with why and how the classical approach works to equip them for life and motivate them for a life of service to Christ. We will focus on the end product, what qualities will define our children when they graduate from our high schools, socially, academically and spiritually. We will discuss how Logic and Latin, along with other uniquely classical educational characteristics, fit in to the big picture. We will especially discuss the importance of guiding your child into embracing a Christian worldview and finding their life's mission. You will leave this conference with a more clear understanding of goals you want your child to achieve in his or her homeschool journey, as well as a proven strategy for achieving those goals.

One only has to listen to discover the heart of a child. Our goal as parents is to reach the heart, rather than simply realign behavior.  Too often, we depend on rules as the primary enforcer of behavior. Rules can change behavior, but they can’t change the heart. When parents begin to discern the difference between character flaws and purposeful disobedience, they will implement a gentler approach to reaching and understanding their children.  As a result, children will more willingly admit their faults and seek help from those they love. Children need to hear the beating of our hearts rather than the beating of our voices. Join Mark as he relates his experience as a shepherd and the important lesson that you don’t become a shepherd just because you own sheep.

A Passionate Pursuit of Excellence
Mark Hamby
Based on the life of Ehud the Benjamite, Mark will unveil the unique strategy that God and his parents used to prepare him to become a skilled and strategic warrior, confident leader, and a skillful entrepreneur. In this seminar we will look at the assessment of a child’s natural abilities and the instructive insights that are necessary to cultivate in each child, teen, and passionate pursuit of excellence in every area of life. This seminar promises to be an eye opener for all ages—in more ways than you expect; but in a way you will never forget! If time allows we will also take parents behind the scenes to see what inspired and motivated the great minds of Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Einstein, Edison, and the more modern creativity of Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and the Beatles. They all had something in common--something available to all! Join Mark and be convinced that “Everyday you are becoming who you will be forever.”
