If the school principal has called and made requests outside Chapter 12 Compulsory Attendance Exceptions, here is a sample letter that you can use or modify to your needs.

Thank you for communicating your request in writing.
According to Hawaii Administrative Rules, Chapter 12 Compulsory Attendance Exceptions, “Section 8-12-13 Notification of intent to home school,” Parents can begin homeschooling their child after submitting a notice of intent. My notice of intent was submitted on date.
Also, according to the DOE Homeschool FAQS, updated 05/2026 here
Under, ‘Processing and paperwork’ one of the questions is ‘What is required to begin homeschooling my child in a Hawaii Public School?’
The answer is “You do not need to enroll your child or provide birth certificate, proof of residence, or health records …”
I am also not required to submit my curriculum to the school for approval.
Under ‘Responsibilities during homeschooling’ one of the questions is ‘Do I need to submit the curriculum that I will be using to teach my child?’
The answer is “No, you are not required to submit your curriculum to the school, but you must keep a record of the planned curriculum that you will be using.”
As you can see, by submitting my notice of intent, I am in compliance with Chapter 12 Compulsory Attendance Exceptions.
