Standardized Achievement Tests

According to section §8-12-18, parents are required to submit scores from a nationally normed standardized achievement test for grades 3, 5, 8, and 10.  Test scores can also be submitted to meet the annual report requirement for non-test grade years.  Per parent report, the Department of Education has accepted the tests listed below.

Stanford Achievement Test (SAT)

A widely used achievement test, the SAT tests word study skills, reading skills/comprehension, vocabulary, mathematics, language, spelling, social studies, science, and listening (depending on grade level). The Stanford 10 is untimed.

BJU Press makes this test available to homeschoolers.Test administrators must be a pre-approved Stanford tester by completing an online application and having a Bachelor of Science or Arts degree. Parents may administer this test to their children if they meet the administrator qualifying requirements. For more information, contact BJU Press at www.bjupresshomeschool.com

BJU Press will begin using 2018 norms for the Stanford in Spring of 2019. This new comparison group has a much higher number of private school students. The new ratio, where private school students far outnumber public school students, makes it more difficult for a student to receive a high percentile rank.

Seton Testing Servicesalso makes the Stanford 10 available to homeschoolers.  Stanford 10 is only administered online by Seton for grades 3-10.  For more information, go to www.setontesting.com

Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS)

A nationally normed standardized achievement test, the ITBS evaluates word analysis, reading comprehension, vocabulary, mathematics, language, spelling, social studies, science, and listening (depending on grade level).

BJU Press makes this test available to homeschoolers.

Test administrators must be a pre-approved tester for the ITBS by completing an online application and having a Bachelor of Science or Arts degree. Parents may administer this test to their children if they meet the administrator qualifying requirements.  For more information, go to www.bjupresshomeschool.com

Seton Testing Servicesalso makes the ITBS available to homeschoolers.

To administer this test, parents must have a Bachelor of Science or Arts degree.  For more information, go to www.setontesting.com

TerraNova 2

Also known as the  CAT 6, the TerraNova 2 is a nationally norm-referenced test that tests reading language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, spelling, and study skills (depending on the grade level).  Parents may administer this test; no bachelor’s degree is required.  The CAT 5 is being phased out.

Seton Testing Services makes the TerraNova 2 available to homeschoolers.

For more information, go to www.setontesting.com

There may be other organizations that provide testing services to homeschoolers. Parents should investigate tests and testing services appropriate for their children.
